This can be so effective, you can almost always get your deposit back after leaving an apartment. If you find cleaning to be therapeutic--which it is!--and wish to clean your home yourself, read on for an efficient way to complete your work.

Gather Your Supplies

Make sure you have everything you need ahead of time, including a few staple items that you can use to improvise. You probably already have toilet cleaner, spray foam for bathroom fixtures and a solid all-purpose cleaner. The following items are some common deep-cleaning supplies that you may or may not need. Peruse and gather:
  • White vinegar
  • Bon Ami, Comet or other abrasive
  • Rags
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Scrubber sponges
  • Oven cleaner
  • Broom
  • Rubber gloves
  • Old toothbrush
  • Paper towels
  • Newspapers (for windows)
  • Mop and/or vacuum
  • Carpet cleaner equipment rental
  • Scrubbing brushes
  • Glass cleaner

Inside Out, Top to Bottom

When you do the work in a particular order, you’re less likely to create more work for yourself. Rather than clean in circles, often leaving a sectioned off pile of work for yourself, think linearly. Start in one of the bedrooms and work from top to bottom. Clean the ceiling fan, sweep down dust and spider webs from the corners of the room and the windows. Save the baseboards and floors for when the bedroom furniture is moved out.

Move on to the living room and follow the same top-to-bottom pattern, sweeping down cobwebs and cleaning ceiling fans with all-purpose cleaner. Clean windows with newspaper and window cleaner. Scrub down doors with a rag and all-purpose cleaner. From there, head to the kitchen and start from the top there too. Change light bulbs, thoroughly clean out the refrigerator, pull the appliances out from the walls and sweep behind them. You could even grab those seldom-cleaned items from too-high storage space and pack them away or clean them.

Next up, the hardest, the bathroom. Start from the top here too, and dust off the tops of cabinets. This is the room where the rubber gloves really get broken out, and you’ll spend a great deal of time scrubbing maybe years’ worth of grime off bathroom tiles, the tub and fixtures, the sink area and the toilet. Empty the cabinets underneath the sink and vacuum out the crevices. Detail the floor around the toilet with heavy duty all-purpose cleaner.

Run the dishwasher on an empty cycle to give it a cleaning. Figure out and run the oven cleaner, making sure you have something to catch all the discard.
