Dallas city skyline

Whether you’re searching for big flavors and authentic cuisine or hoping to learn a thing or two about being a cowboy, there’s a lot to love about Dallas! This is why we’ve put together some key information that will have you feeling like a local in no time!

Overview & History of Dallas

Established in 1841, there are now more than 1.3 million residents who call Dallas home. Located in North Texas, Dallas’ commercial industries began to soar in the 70s thanks to the arrival of railroads and the abundance of locally sourced grain, leather, and cotton. In fact, Dallas was the top manufacturer for cotton-ginning machinery. During and after the Second World War, several large aircraft manufacturing plants were established in the area, followed by electronics and automobile assembly plants, giving the city an innovative edge paired with a blue-collar vibe. Today, Dallas is known for its restaurants, shopping, skyscrapers, and sports. The population is culturally diverse and incredibly family-friendly.

Cost of Living in Dallas

Considering a city’s cost of living is an important first step in deciding if you can financially swing it in a new town, especially if you have a family. While the cost of housing and utilities in Dallas falls slightly above the national average (about 5%), costs associated with transportation and groceries are about 6% lower. Apart from housing, costs are pretty reasonable overall, and if you look hard enough, it is still possible to find affordable housing in a neighborhood that you love!

The Job Market in Dallas

Whether you are relocating for a current position or hoping to find something new, the job market plays in instrumental role in moving to a new city. Fortunately, Dallas’ job market tops the charts. In fact, Dallas-Fort Worth led the country in job gains in March of 2020. Home to a diverse and fairly robust job market, Dallas adds more than 100,000 jobs each year and is the 3rd in the U.S. for highest salaries.

There are also several large companies that operate out of Dallas, spanning industries and sparking job creation in fields such as health care, retail, oil, and food. Notable companies with headquarters in Dallas include Pizza Hut, AT&T, Dell, American Airlines, J.C. Penney, and Tenet Healthcare.

Popular Neighborhoods

If you’re serious about making a move to the “Big D,” then it’s time to take a closer look at some of the popular neighborhoods in the area to figure out which could be the perfect fit for you.

  • Lakewood: Just a few minutes from downtown Dallas, this neighborhood is known for its laid-back luxury and impressive old and new homes. It’s located near White Rock Lake, as well as the award-winning Lakewood Elementary School.
  • Preston Hollow: This neighborhood boasts wide open spaces, plentiful trees, and numerous creeks, while only being about 6 miles north of bustling downtown Dallas. With its large home lots and quiet streets, this is a popular choice for those looking to settle down with family.
  • Kessler Park/North Oak Cliff: With its rolling hills, beautiful trees, and impressively sized housing lots, this southern neighborhood is the hidden gem of Dallas. This is an area where neighborhood get-togethers and porch parties are frequent, and the proximity to downtown, the Bishop Arts Districts, Uptown, and Klyde Warren Park make it even more desirable.
  • University Park: This highly coveted neighborhood boasts meticulously landscaped yards, quiet streets, and stunning homes. While it is on the pricey side, it comes with great public schools from kindergarten through high school, and even has its own fire department, police, and beautiful community pool. It’s also in close proximity to downtown, making for an easy commute.
  • Deep Ellum: Located east of downtown, this edgy and vibrant neighborhood has a variety of entertainment and live music venues, as well as diverse art and cuisine. Deep Ellum was the hub of the jazz scene back in the 1920s, and it remains a music staple today.

Entertainment & Culture

Dallas truly has no shortage of entertainment, art, and culture, from hip and trendy restaurant scenes to creative arts and music venues. Whether you’re searching for craft beers and cocktails, looking to wander through the Bishop Arts District, interested in catching an indie flick at  The Magnolia Theater, or interested in doing a little hiking and biking along the Katy Trail, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
